You may have heard of this one before. Blackle is a search engine that is powered by google, but the black facade requires less energy needed to use it. Blackle is my homepage, and you should make it yours. Everytime you do a search on blackle, you save alot of energy! Also, Blackle has just introduced something called Blackle Pages, which provides listings for people who have sustainable products and websites to become better known by the general public. It uses the same energy saving black screen that Blackle does, and it gives people more recources.

Sorry, but if you read the Wikipedia article, it’s discussed how this actually INCREASES power consumption on LCD monitors (by virtue of how they operate and present black pixels, black != no light for an LCD screen as it does on a CRT). This is important considering the fact that CRT monitors are being phased out by LCD monitors, in which case, most people are doing harm by using blackle.

I prefer http://www.keepglobe.com over Blackle. They donate 50% of revenue to a green cause and it is hosted on a server that is powered by wind and sun energy. They also have an image search. Black search engines do not save energy as they claim and also my eyes twitch after seeing that black background.

There are around 25 different versions of “black google” online. The best one I’ve found is http://www.cleanblack.com. Cleanblack is the only version that allows you to change the text colors of the google search results. Try it yourself by going to http://www.cleanblack.com/theme/
